The Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center's (DCVAMC) Community Resource and Referral Center (CRRC) exemplifies the Medical Center's commitment to providing excellent care and services in an environment of compassion that respects homeless and at-risk Veterans. The CRRC is the first of its kind in the Washington DC area and will serve as a 24/7 hub to combat homelessness among Veterans. It is one of 17 Centers the Department of Veterans Affairs plans to strategically locate across the nation. These facilities centralize federal and local partners to provide services to homeless and at-risk Veterans. Although not a shelter, the CRRC provides services to assist Veterans and their family members. The building includes a Primary Care Clinic, a complete kitchen, laundry and shower facilities, a food pantry and a play room for children, as well as a host of other community services. The Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) Southeast is open Monday, Thursday and Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to provide basic medical and preventative care, health education, mental health services, addiction counseling, comprehensive women’s health care and nutritional counseling to eligible veterans. Referral services are provided for those who require specialized care. Veterans may call (202) 745-8685 to make appointments at the clinic. The clinic is located in the Southeast Veterans Service Center near the intersection of Chesapeake Street and Southern Avenue in Southeast Washington. It is easily accessible by Metrobus routes A6 (Anacostia-Congress Heights Line) and P12 (Eastover-Addison Road Line). The Anacostia subway station is on the A6 route, and the Addison Road subway station is on the P12 route. Dr. Robin Peck provides comprehensive Women's health care. Veterans may call (202) 745-8685 Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to schedule an appointment, for enrollment or to obtain a picture identification card. Veterans may also call the Medical Center Call Center (202) 745-8577 Monday through Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. to schedule an appointment or for additional information. Q. What if I need care when the clinic is closed? A. If your illness is not life-threatening, call the Medical Advice line and a nurse will advise you on what to do and where to seek medical treatment. If you have a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency room for immediate medical attention. Q. Who should I call if I have questions about my health care? A. Call the nurse case manager Mondays Thursdays and Fridays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at (202)745-8685. At other times you should call the Medical Advice Line nurse. Q. How do I get my prescriptions filled? A. During your scheduled visit, this will be discussed with you. The first refill on a new prescription will be automatically mailed to you. For additional refills by mail you must complete and return the pharmacy refill form that is included with the first refill. Q. If I need an X-ray can it be done at the Community Clinic? A. If ordered by your doctor, X-rays will be taken at the Greater Southeast Community Hospital. Q. Will there be transportation services to the clinic? A. About Us Located in the nation's capital, only a short distance from the historic buildings that house today's leaders and commemorate yesterday's, the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center is one of the most visible and dynamic facilities in the VA system. This tertiary care teaching facility provides acute general and specialized services in medicine, surgery, neurology and psychiatry, as well offering nursing home care unit treatment. The medical center also oversees a satellite Substance Abuse Clinic and three Vet Centers. The medical center's staff of 1,700 provides care to veterans residing in the District of Columbia and portions of Virginia and Maryland. The medical center treats over 50,000 veterans and has over 500,000 outpatient visits each year. The Washington DC VAMC is the only VA medical center to hold three medical school affiliations. It is also affiliated with many other colleges and universities in such areas as pharmacy, rehabilitation medicine, biomedical engineering, dietetics, social work, nursing and medical center management. The medical center has a multi-million dollar research program that supports more than 100 investigators and 300 active research projects. Major research in alcoholism, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and spinal cord regeneration is being conducted. In 1995, the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the first VA medical centers to use the Enhanced-Use Lease to build a childcare center on VA property. The childcare center, operated by La Petite Academy, offers convenient childcare for VA employees. The Enhanced-Use Lease enabled La Petite to lease VA land and build the center that will revert back to the medical center in 30 years. The Washington DC VAMC has VA/DoD sharing agreements with National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda and Walter Reed Army Medical Center and was selected as a primary back-up facility during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
