Japanese porcelain was first produced in the early 17th century in a small town called Arita located in the northern part of Kyushu island, which is the southernmost island of the four main islands of Japan. Towards the end of the 16th century, Hideyoshi Toyotomi the ruler of Japan at that time, sent his army to invade Korea twice. The feudal Lord Nabeshima, who also participated in the invasions with his troops, forced a Korean master potter named Ri Sampei and his potters group to come to Japan. It is generally accepted that this Korean potter discovered a large kaolin deposit in lzumiyama mountain in Arita, and that he successfully produced white porcelain for the first time in Japan. In 1648, Nabeshima's feudal clan government placed Arita under its strict administration in order to protect and promote porcelain manufacture in Arita, as well as prevent the leakage of the porcelain making technique to other feudal clans. It also limited porcelain trade with merchants from other feudal clans to the nearby port town of Imari.

Ikitsuki ( 生月町 Ikitsuki-chō ) was a town on the island of the same name located in Kitamatsuura District , Nagasaki Prefecture , Japan . As of 2003, the town had an estimated population of 7,392 and a density of 445.84 persons per km². The total area was 16.58 km². On October 1, 2005, Ikitsuki, along with the town of Tabira and the village of Ōshima (all from Kitamatsuura District ), was merged into the expanded city of Hirado . Ikitsuki is known historically for two primary reasons: a legacy of whaling and hidden Christians . Near the south end of the island is a museum with exhibits on both these aspects of Ikitsuki's history. Nearly all the people of Ikitsuki live on the east side of the island. The west side faces out into the open ocean (sea) and is very windy. In addition, much of the west side of the island is cliff-face, with only a few spots which are flat enough even for terraced farming. The scenery is stunning in Ikitsuki, and has attracted a great number of domestic tourists since road access was available through bridges connecting Hirado Island with the mainland and Ikitsuki Island to Hirado. The dialect of Ikitsuki can be difficult to understand, even for Japanese people who live in nearby towns. However, this is more true among the older people, and "standard" Japanese is spoken in educational and governmental settings.

There once was a porcelain stone mine here in Izumiyama. It was first discovered in 1616, the early Edo Period, by a Korean potter named Yi Sam Pyeong, which led to the production of Japan’s first porcelain. At the quarry today hardly any productive operation is done but the appearance of the mountain formed after a long period of mining is breathtaking.

Mount Kagami, with its height of 284 meters above sea level, is famous as a spot for taking in spectacular views of Karatsu city right below, as well as Japan's famous Nishi-no-Matsubara, Karatsu bay and even Iki Island of neighboring Nagasaki prefecture on clear days. The winding, 5 km road leading to the top of Mount Kagami is known as a favored drive spot. There are many legends which surround Mount Kagami, and it is even mentioned in Manyoshu, (The Anthology of Myriad Leaves) which is the oldest existing collection of Japanese poetry. The name Mount Kagami, which means "mirror" in Japanese, is said to have come from Empress Jingu enshrining a mirror at the summit. One of the Mount Kagami legends is the legend of Princess Sayo Matsura. Princess Sayo is said to have waved goodbye to her beloved Otomo no Sadehiko as he embarked for the Korean Peninsular from the top of Mount Kagami. She waved her "hire", a shawl-type cloth which women wore in those days, so the mountain is also known as "Hirefuri-yama" or literally, "hire waving mountain". Watada of Karatsu city is known as the place where Princess Sayo ran down the mountain chasing Otomo no Sadehiko's ship. There is a boulder here in which the footprints of Princess Sayo can still be seen. There are many other places in Karatsu city with connections to Princess Sayo, such as Tajima Shrine in Yobiko town, etc. There is also a poem written by famous Japanese poet, Yamanoue no Okura, in Manyoshu about the legend of Princess Sayo. At the top of Mount Kagami, there is a look-out, rest area, and open grass area. The summit is also famous for sakura cherry blossoms, azaleas and other flowers. Also known as the mecca of hang gliding, these days people also participate in paragliding from the mountain's top. With a wide, open sky above and beautiful sea below, the gliders look like they are enjoying themselves to the fullest as they soar through the air.

Kannon Falls is located in Nanayama, Karatsu city, around midway upstream of Taki River, a subsidiary of Tamashima River. It is 45 meters high and 10 meters across. The ferociousness of the water as it roars down the cliff has earned it the name of "Ototaki", or "Man Falls". This magnificent waterfall and the 2 kilometer or so gorge around it is the migration route of Cherry trout, etc. Beside the waterfall is a "Namame Kannon" enshrinement, and it is said that eye-related ailments can be cured by washing one's eyes in the water of the pool here. Kannon Falls is the convergence point of 8 waterfalls and pools connected by streams. These are the "Kigakure-no-Fuchi" (tree hiding pool), where the trees grow as if to hide the river from the walking track, "Seijaku-no-Fuchi" (silent pool), a quietly-flowing dark blue pool, "Kiyome-no-Fuchi" (cleansing pool), with beautiful autumn leaves and where people cleanse their hands before praying at Fukuju Temple, "Okumezura-no-Fuchi", whose name comes from Okumezura Gorge, which was named by the 5th village leader, Haruyoshi Miyoshino, Sagiri-no-Taki, where the camellia bushes grow in clusters, the water sounds fierce and the spray is like vapor, and finally "Shiroginu-no-Taki", (white silk falls), which covers the boulders in a glittering curtain of silver as though it was a piece of white silk. Each of these 8 waterfalls and pools are a spectacular sight to behold. This area is also famous as a wild bird oasis, home to the River Kingfisher, Wagtail and more. Kannon Falls has been chosen as one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls. International Shower Climbing in Nanayama is held in August, and the otherwise quiet gorge becomes abuzz with the sounds of the many participants.

KARATSU CASTLE Karatsu Castle was built in 1608. This castle is located facing the sea and is situated in the northern part of Karatsu City. Karatsu Castle is also known as Maizuru (Dancing Crane) Castle as it resembles the figure of a bird with its wings spread wide as there is a pine grove extending left to right and because its donjon (tower keep) is thought to look like the head of a crane. In spring, the 500 cherry trees and the Wisteria flowers in Karatsu, designated a product of nature by the city, are in full bloom. Illuminated at night.
