01 The internet now has a synthetic layer

Generative artificial intelligence can produce text, images, video, audio, and software from prompts. That capability is useful when a person is directing it toward a real task. The problem begins when volume becomes the objective: cheaply generated pages, thumbnails, comments, and clips can be made faster than anyone can assess them. The result is not merely more content. 03 Scale is the defining variable

The exact fraction of online material made by AI is difficult to measure because classifiers disagree and disclosure is inconsistent. The reliable observation is directional: model access is broad, generation is fast, and distribution systems reward novelty. At scale, even a small error rate matters. A stream that is 95 percent useful can feel unusable when the remaining five percent is repeated, optimized, and placed in every search surface.

04 Platforms inherit the verification burden

Search engines and social feeds are not neutral pipes. Ranking systems decide which material receives exposure, so they become the first line of defense against synthetic repetition. Provenance standards such as C2PA can attach signed claims to an asset, but a signature can establish origin without proving that the claim is true or that the work is valuable. Platforms still need editorial signals, abuse detection, and accountable policies.

05 Detection is a moving target

Text detectors are especially fragile because language models can revise wording, translate output, or mix generated passages with human edits. Image and video artifacts also disappear as models improve. Better evidence combines multiple signals: creator history, provenance metadata, reuse patterns, unusual posting velocity, and the connection between a claim and a source. No single classifier should be treated as a final verdict about authorship.

06 What comes after the flood

The durable response is not to reject every synthetic artifact. It is to make identity, provenance, and responsibility more visible. Readers need interfaces that distinguish an original source from an automatically repeated derivative; creators need ways to declare how a model was used; and platforms need consequences for deliberate deception. Generative tools can expand expression, but a healthy information system must still reward care over volume.
