Cartography explained: the ideas that matter

01Projection: the sphere meets the plane
Projection is the idea that a round earth must become a flat map, and that this transformation is never free. Every projection is a mathematical function that converts spherical coordinates to Cartesian ones, and every such function distorts at least one spatial property: area, shape, distance, or direction.
The useful way to think about projection is not "which is correct" but "what does this projection sacrifice?" The Mercator projection sacrifices area for conformality. The equal-area projections sacrifice shape for area. Understanding projection means understanding the tradeoff, because the choice of projection is the first argument a map makes about what matters.
Purpose sits at the center: it determines which of the other four ideas gets priority.
02Scale: the ratio that governs detail
Scale is the ratio between a distance on the map and the corresponding distance on the ground. It is not a quality but a constraint. At 1:25,000, one centimeter on the map equals 250 meters in reality, and individual buildings can be shown. At 1:1,000,000, one centimeter equals ten kilometers, and only major features fit.
Scale determines what the map can say. A small-scale map of a continent cannot show village roads, not because they are unimportant but because there is no room. Scale is therefore not just a number but a decision about which level of reality the map will engage with.
03Generalization: the art of leaving things out
Generalization is the process of simplifying reality to fit a scale. Coastlines are smoothed, minor roads are dropped, clusters of buildings become dots. The idea sounds simple, but it involves judgment: which features are structurally necessary and which are noise?
Two principles guide the answer. First, the map's purpose: a road atlas keeps highways and drops trails; a hiking map does the reverse. Second, the visual load: a map that tries to show everything at a small scale becomes unreadable. Generalization is the idea that omission is not failure but design.
04Symbolization: the visual vocabulary
Symbolization is how data becomes marks. The French cartographer Jacques Bertin identified six visual variables: size, value (lightness), color, orientation, shape, and texture. Each variable can encode a different kind of data — size for quantity, color for category, value for ordered ranges.
The idea that matters is that symbolization is a language with grammar. Using color to encode temperature and size to encode population is conventional and legible. Reversing the assignment — size for temperature, color for population — is not wrong in a technical sense, but it violates reader expectations and slows comprehension. Good cartography respects the grammar.

05Purpose: the map is an answer to a question
The most important idea is that every map answers a question. A nautical chart answers "how do I navigate safely?" A choropleth of election results answers "where did each party win?" A topographic sheet answers "what is the terrain like here?" The question determines the projection, the scale, the generalization rules, and the symbolization scheme.
This is why a map that tries to be universal usually fails. The world is too complex for a single representation to capture, and a map that attempts to show everything ends up showing nothing clearly. Purpose is the organizing principle that makes the other four ideas coherent.
06The map is not the territory
The phrase, coined by Alfred Korzybski in 1933, captures the deepest idea in cartography. A map is a representation, not the thing represented. It selects, simplifies, and transforms. It can be more useful than direct experience — you cannot see the shape of a continent from the ground — but it is always a model, not reality.
Keeping this idea in mind is the difference between reading a map critically and reading it credulously. Every map is someone's answer to someone's question, made with someone's tools. Understanding the five ideas lets you ask whose question, whose tools, and what the answer leaves out.
