01 Start with the distinctions
The word dream compresses several phenomena: a remembered story, a fleeting image, an emotional experience, a physiological state and a theory about why any of them occur. Scientific clarity improves when those layers are kept separate. REM is a sleep state; dreaming is an experience; dream recall is a report made later.
02 The old wish-fulfilment idea
Freudian theory made meaning central: a dream’s surface narrative could disguise a latent wish or conflict. The historical importance of that idea is real, but its explanatory flexibility is also its weakness. If any dream can be interpreted after the fact, interpretation alone cannot establish a causal mechanism. Contemporary work can study emotion and memory without assuming a universal symbolic codebook.

03 Activation, synthesis and prediction
The activation–synthesis family of models emphasizes how a brain constructs a narrative from internally generated activity. Predictive-processing approaches ask how a generative model produces a world when sensory input is reduced and bodily signals continue. These are not identical theories, but both direct attention to construction: the dreaming brain is actively explaining signals, not passively receiving a movie.
04 Threat, continuity and memory
Threat-simulation and continuity theories propose that dreams may rehearse danger or extend waking concerns. Memory research adds a more modest claim: recent experiences can bias dream content, and sleep supports forms of learning and emotional processing. Neither point means a dream predicts the future or diagnoses the dreamer. It means waking life supplies material that sleep reorganizes.
05 What counts as evidence?
A compelling anecdote is useful for generating a hypothesis, not for settling it. Stronger evidence links a dream report to the time of awakening, sleep-stage physiology, neural activity or a controlled manipulation. Even then, correlations do not automatically identify purpose. The neural correlates of dreaming remain an active research area precisely because experience cannot be read directly from one measurement.
06 The portable explanation
The most useful summary is plural and testable: dreaming is an internally generated conscious experience that can occur across sleep states; its form depends on brain dynamics, memory and emotion; and its function is not settled. Good explanations reduce confusion without pretending that an evocative dream has one scientifically recoverable meaning.
