The Electoral College vs Popular Vote: A 200-Year Gap That's Getting Worse

01 When the System and the People Disagree

Six times in American history, the Electoral College winner lost the popular vote. Four of those six happened in the last 25 years. The system was designed as a compromise between Congress choosing the president and direct democracy. But the Founders assumed electors would exercise independent judgment. That assumption died in 1800.

02 The Swing State Problem

In 2024, 94% of campaign spending went to just 7 states. If you don't live in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, or North Carolina, your vote for president is statistically irrelevant to the outcome. The Electoral College doesn't protect small states — it empowers large states that happen to be competitive.

03 The National Popular Vote Compact

17 states with 209 electoral votes have signed onto a compact to award their electors to the national popular vote winner. It activates at 270. They're 61 votes away. If it passes, the Electoral College exists on paper but the popular vote decides the presidency. Legal challenges would be immediate, but the constitutional text doesn't prohibit states from choosing electors this way.
