01The foldable premise: two devices in one, at an engineering price

A foldable promises two devices in one body: a pocketable phone that opens into a small tablet. Wikipedia's overview of the category traces the modern market to the Samsung Galaxy Fold in 2019, which established the template still used today — a flexible display that bends around a hinge, a departure from the folding clamshells of earlier feature phones. The appeal is functional rather than cosmetic: reading, mapping, editing, and split-screen work genuinely benefit from a seven-to-eight-inch canvas.

The engineering price is steep. A folding display must survive tens of thousands of bends, so it uses layered flexible materials and ultra-thin glass instead of a rigid slab; the hinge needs dozens of precision parts; the battery must split into two cells to fit around the fold; and the whole assembly must stay thin enough to feel like a phone. Every one of those requirements works against the cost, the durability, and the battery life that flat flagships take for granted — which is exactly why each new generation is judged on what it fixed.

02Hinge evolution: from gaps and grit to water-tight teardrop designs

The hinge is where foldables have improved most visibly. The 2019 Galaxy Fold shipped with a visible gap along the spine, and debris that slipped through could puncture the display — an early, well-documented failure mode. Subsequent generations tightened the mechanism: the Z Fold 3 in 2021 paired a redesigned hinge with the category's first IPX8 water-resistance rating, meaning the open-and-shut mechanism could be sealed against submersion even though dust ingress remained the harder problem.

Dust is tougher than water because particles jam gears and scratch the flexible panel from underneath. Samsung answered incrementally: slimmer hinges with fewer exposed gaps arrived with the Z Fold 5's closing design, and the Z Fold 6 and 7 generations added a formal dust rating, reaching IP48 — protected against tools and larger particles, though not the full dust-tight grade that slab phones earn. In everyday use the crease disappears under content, especially with dark backgrounds and while the screen is active; reviewers who live with foldables tend to stop noticing it, while first-time users spot it immediately under reflected light. Objectively it is a permanent textural and optical artifact, and no competitor has eliminated it — every book-style foldable on the market shows some version of it. The honest framing: the crease was never solved, only reduced, and buyers should handle a unit in person before deciding whether it bothers them.

04Durability data: fold cycles, IP ratings, and what the testing shows

Durability claims now come with numbers. Samsung rates its recent book-style Folds for 200,000 folds — a figure verified in UL-style testing that the company translates into roughly ten openings per day for about five years. Third-party robot tests generally corroborate that the hinge mechanism itself outlasts the rating, while also showing that real-world failures usually arrive by another route: particles reaching the display, pressure damage, or the protective film layer rather than the hinge.

Ingress protection tells the rest of the story. Water resistance has been effectively solved since the Fold 3's IPX8 rating in 2021; dust protection arrived later and remains partial at IP48 on recent generations. The gap between laboratory fold counts and lived experience is the key nuance — a rating describes the hinge, not the whole device. Eighth-generation units are the most durable foldables ever shipped, but they still demand more care than any flat flagship, and a care program remains a sensible line item in the total cost.

A 200,000-fold rating sounds abstract, but it is about ten opens a day for five years. The rating certifies the hinge — dust, pocket grit, and pressure remain the real-world risks.

05Battery and thermals: the flat-surface compromises that persist

The compromises that have not been fixed live in the battery bay and the thermal budget. To fit around the hinge, a foldable splits its capacity into two smaller cells, which costs efficiency and total charge: recent Galaxy Z Fold models carry roughly 4,400mAh in a dual-cell split, against the roughly 5,000mAh-class single cell in the same year's Galaxy S Ultra, as the chart below illustrates. Thin walls also leave less room for a large vapor chamber, so foldables typically sustain lower peak performance and ship with more conservative charging speeds.

These are structural constraints, not oversights. Battery energy density improves a few percent a year, while a folding phone must divide its interior volume among the display, the hinge, and two boards. Each generation chips away at the gap through silicon efficiency and slightly denser cells, but the physics guarantee that a same-year flat flagship will charge faster and last longer per charge. Buyers choosing a foldable are still, in effect, trading battery endurance for screen area.

06Software for folds: multi-window, app continuity, and AI features

Hardware matured faster than software, but the software story is now a genuine differentiator. The large inner display earns its space through multi-window: two or three apps side by side, drag-and-drop between them, and a taskbar for switching. App continuity — an app reflowing from the cover screen to the open screen without losing state — works well for first-party applications and inconsistently elsewhere, because every third-party developer must optimize for the taller inner aspect ratio individually.

The AI features added in recent generations are arguably the best argument for the form factor: live call translation, interpreter mode that faces each participant a screen, note summarization, and visual search all benefit from more display area and the silicon to run on. Long update commitments matter here too — software features ship to foldables first and reach older units through the same multi-year support windows the flat flagships receive. The remaining gap is uneven third-party optimization, which improves year by year but still shows in games and niche productivity apps.

07The eighth-generation verdict: mainstream-ready or still a niche

Eight generations in, the scoreboard is clear. Solved or nearly solved: water resistance, hinge gaps, thickness, partial dust protection, and software polish. Unsolved: the crease, the battery-capacity deficit, sustained thermal performance, and — most consequentially — the price premium, which still positions a book-style foldable against two good flat phones.

Market data explains why the verdict stays nuanced. Industry trackers such as IDC and Counterpoint Research estimate foldables at roughly one to two percent of global smartphone shipments — somewhere in the region of 17 to 25 million units a year — growing, but nowhere near mainstream. That is the honest summary of generation eight: for enthusiasts, productivity-focused users, and anyone who values screen area over battery endurance, foldables are finally mainstream-ready hardware. For everyone else they remain a premium niche that improves more slowly than the early years promised. The trajectory, however, is unmistakable: each generation has moved a former compromise off the complaint list.
