Fort Drum in northern New York is the home of the 10th Mountain Division, an Army formation whose identity is built around rapid deployment, austere terrain, and expeditionary warfare.

01 The Northern Training Ground

Fort Drum occupies roughly 107,000 acres near Watertown, New York. Its large training areas, harsh winters, and proximity to the Adirondacks make it one of the Army's most demanding continental installations.

Snow, frozen ground, limited daylight, and lake-effect weather create conditions that cannot be reproduced by a classroom or a simulator. Units learn to maintain vehicles, communications, and human performance when the environment is actively hostile.

02 The Division's Origins

The 10th Mountain Division was activated during World War II to fight in the Italian Apennines. Soldiers trained on skis and climbing equipment at Camp Hale in Colorado before campaigning through steep terrain and fortified mountain positions.

The division was inactivated after the war and reactivated in 1985 at Fort Drum. Its modern mission expanded from literal mountain combat to rapid global deployment and light infantry operations.

03 Iraq and Afghanistan

The 10th Mountain Division deployed repeatedly after September 11, 2001. Its brigades operated in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other theaters where distance, insurgency, and difficult terrain stressed conventional planning.

The division's experience demonstrated that mountain expertise is not a niche capability. Dismounted movement, distributed logistics, and small-unit initiative matter in cities, valleys, and remote border regions.

04 Readiness and Mobility

Fort Drum units train to deploy quickly with a mix of wheeled and tracked vehicles, aviation, artillery, and infantry. Readiness is measured not only by personnel fill but by how fast a brigade can move from home station into a functioning theater formation.

The division also maintains cold-weather competence, including survival, mobility, casualty evacuation, and equipment procedures for subzero operations.

05 The Community Cost

The installation is economically central to Jefferson County and the North Country. It supports thousands of soldiers, families, civilian employees, contractors, and local businesses.

The tradeoff is a high operational footprint: noise, road congestion, land-use restrictions, and the challenge of retaining specialized workers in a remote region.

06 Why Mountain Skills Matter

Great-power competition does not eliminate hard terrain. The Arctic, the Himalayas, eastern Europe, and rugged Pacific islands all reward forces that can move and fight away from roads and climate-controlled bases.

Fort Drum's strategic value is therefore not just the division stationed there. It is the institutional knowledge of making a force function when weather and terrain remove the easy options.
