01Singapore leads Asia in longevity investment
Sinclair identifies Singapore as the leading Asian investor in longevity. The city-state has a strong interest in healthy aging because its population is affluent, highly educated and aging rapidly. In this race, investment is not just a grant line: it is talent recruitment, clinical infrastructure, data and a willingness to make healthy lifespan a national priority.
02The Middle East bets big on longevity: Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar
The Middle East is also moving aggressively. Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar are all described as major longevity backers. Saudi-backed Evolution put $40 million into the Healthspan XPRIZE, while Peter Diamandis says he wishes the region would direct trillions toward longevity with the same ambition it has shown toward artificial intelligence.
03The US lead in longevity science is at risk
The United States still leads the field, but Sinclair argues that most of the Western world is not investing at the scale needed to build an industry. The UK and Australia have pockets of excellent laboratories, yet not a broad commercial ecosystem. A scientific lead can disappear quickly when people, patents and companies follow the money elsewhere.
04China: a decade behind but gaining ground as US cuts funding
Sinclair estimates that China is more than a decade behind the United States in longevity science. But a lead is only useful if it is maintained. He warns that US science funding cuts of more than half could seed that advantage to China, which would be laughing all the way to the intellectual-property office as researchers, ideas and patents migrate.
05The Harvard funding crisis: grants terminated, careers ended
Sinclair says Harvard specifically became a target and that 100 percent of the government grants supporting his lab were terminated. He recounts Kelly Rich, a postdoctoral researcher working on ALS, losing a career grant. In another scene, a colleague in the cafeteria says he had a good run and is going home. The lab had operated on about $3 million a year, with the majority government funded; Sinclair says the stress has forced him to spend more time acting as a psychiatrist than as a scientist.
06Crypto community and billionaire backing: Altos, NewLimit, Retro
Private capital is filling some of the gap. Jeff Bezos and Yuri Milner back Altos Labs, Brian Armstrong backs NewLimit, and Sam Altman backs Retro. Sinclair sees a shared worldview between crypto and longevity: Bitcoin projects a long-term monetary vision, while longevity projects a long-term biological one. A lab budget measured in millions can therefore attract funding decisions with billion-dollar consequences.
07Why longevity is a rising tide for all nations
Unlike a winner-take-all AI system, Sinclair describes longevity as a rising tide for all eight billion people. South Korea's birth rate of about 0.7, Japan, Italy and much of Western Europe have an urgent demographic reason to extend healthy working and living years. The old overpopulation argument is also changing: most countries now sit below the 2.1 replacement rate. The race is global because the payoff - more healthy years - is broadly shared.
