01The clock is an organ system
The circadian system coordinates sleep and wakefulness with body temperature, hormone release, feeding, digestion, and alertness. A short trip may not justify aggressive clock manipulation, while a long stay rewards gradual pre-adjustment and consistent destination cues.
07Adaptation is a timed experiment
Shift sleep in small steps before departure when practical, seek appropriately timed light at arrival, keep meals and activity aligned with local time, and protect the first nights from alcohol and unnecessary late stimulation. Melatonin can help some travelers but is dose- and timing-sensitive; discuss it with a clinician or pharmacist, especially with medications or health conditions.
