01The clock is an organ system

The circadian system coordinates sleep and wakefulness with body temperature, hormone release, feeding, digestion, and alertness. The central pacemaker in the suprachiasmatic nucleus uses light information from the eyes to align daily rhythms with the environment. Jet lag is a temporary misalignment, not simply tiredness from travel.

02Flight crosses geography, not biology

When a person flies across several time zones, local clocks jump immediately but internal rhythms shift gradually. Eastward travel usually demands a phase advance—sleeping and waking earlier—which many people find harder than delaying the clock after westward travel.

03Light is the strongest reset cue

Light reaching the retina signals the master clock and can shift its phase. The timing matters: morning and evening light do not have identical effects. A traveler’s plan should therefore consider direction of travel, destination bedtime, season, and the actual schedule rather than treating sunlight as universally helpful at any hour.

04Sleep pressure adds a second problem

Time awake builds homeostatic sleep pressure, while circadian alerting rises and falls on its own schedule. Jet lag combines both: you may be exhausted when the local day expects alertness, then unexpectedly awake when it is time to sleep. Naps can help function but may reduce the pressure needed for local bedtime.

05Digestion travels on its own clock

Meal timing and the gut’s peripheral clocks can remain out of step with the central clock. That helps explain appetite changes, nausea, constipation, or a “heavy” feeling after crossing zones. Regular meals at destination time, hydration, and moderation can provide predictable cues while the system catches up.

06Direction and routine change the experience

Westward travel often allows a later bedtime; eastward travel asks for an earlier one. The number of zones, light exposure, sleep debt, age, stress, and trip length also matter. A short trip may not justify aggressive clock manipulation, while a long stay rewards gradual pre-adjustment and consistent destination cues.

07Adaptation is a timed experiment

Shift sleep in small steps before departure when practical, seek appropriately timed light at arrival, keep meals and activity aligned with local time, and protect the first nights from alcohol and unnecessary late stimulation. Melatonin can help some travelers but is dose- and timing-sensitive; discuss it with a clinician or pharmacist, especially with medications or health conditions.
