01The container changed the map
Standardized containers let cargo move without unloading each item at every boundary. Ships, cranes, trucks, railways and warehouses can coordinate around a common unit, lowering handling time and reducing damage.
02Ports are time machines
A modern port converts a vessel arrival into thousands of moves. Berth allocation, crane scheduling, yard stacking and customs clearance all matter. A delay at one stage can leave the ship waiting or the yard without space.

03Ships are optimized for scale
Large container ships reduce cost per box on a full route, but they also concentrate risk. A blocked channel, mechanical failure or missing crew can interrupt capacity far beyond one local harbor.

After a box leaves the ship, inland transport becomes decisive. Trucks and railways must have chassis, drivers, locomotives, slots and fuel. The port is only a node in a network whose weakest land connection can set the pace.
05Why shocks propagate
Schedules use buffers, but disruptions consume them. Missed connections create vessel bunching, empty equipment in the wrong place and warehouses that receive too much or too little inventory. Prices then reflect scarcity before goods physically disappear.

06Trade is visible in the box count
Container throughput measures activity, but not all trade uses containers and not all boxes represent final demand. Rates, dwell time, blank sailings and congestion reveal different parts of the system.
07Resilience is a design choice
Redundant routes, better visibility and more inventory can absorb shocks, but each has a cost. The goal is not an unbreakable supply chain; it is one that fails gradually, communicates clearly and recovers quickly.
