01CORAL STONE MADE THE COAST VISIBLE

Swahili builders worked with materials shaped by the coast. Coral rag could be quarried, dressed, and laid into walls; lime mortar and plaster made surfaces more durable and sometimes more refined; mangrove poles supplied structural timber where suitable wood was scarce. 03HOUSES WERE SOCIAL INSTRUMENTS

The result is not a perfect reconstruction. It is a grounded picture of cities built through repeated negotiation: between coast and interior, household and community, visitor and resident, authority and labor. Their design was social before it was monumental.
