Smart glasses are finally a platform: inside the Meta Ray-Ban era

01 WHY GLASSES, WHY NOW
Computers have been trying to climb onto faces for a decade. Google Glass made the first serious attempt in 2013 and became a case study in how not to launch a wearable: a fifteen-hundred-dollar developer edition with a conspicuous camera, weak battery life, and no answer to the question of what it was actually for. For years afterward, camera glasses were a punchline, the category everyone had already watched fail once.
Three curves crossed to change that. Cameras and low-power system-on-chip designs got small enough to disappear into a sunglass frame. Bluetooth audio made open-ear speakers good enough to replace earbuds for short sessions. And multimodal AI models made voice queries about what the wearer is looking at genuinely useful rather than a party trick. By 2023 the components, the models, and the retail channels all existed at the same time.
Meta, which had already shipped one underwhelming glasses generation in 2021, rebuilt the product with EssilorLuxottica's Ray-Ban brand, priced it like sunglasses instead of like a gadget, and let the assistant do the selling. The result is the first camera-glasses line to sell in the millions of units, and the template every competitor from Google to Xiaomi is now copying.
02 WHAT IS ACTUALLY INSIDE META RAY-BANS
Strip the frame down and it is a small sensor package in a fashion housing: a twelve-megapixel camera at the hinge with a capture indicator, a five-microphone array, open-ear speakers aimed at the ear, a touch strip on one temple, a Snapdragon-class processor, and batteries hidden inside the temple arms, topped up by a charging case. None of the components are exotic. The engineering work went into fitting them into a frame that still looks like a Wayfarer.
The software is the differentiator. A wake word summons the assistant, which answers questions about what the camera sees, translates signs and menus in view, identifies landmarks, reads text aloud, and handles calls and music. Capture flows to a companion app for editing and sharing. The glasses act mostly as a sensor and audio peripheral for Meta's cloud models rather than as a standalone computer.
The pricing tells you where the strategy sits. At a few hundred dollars, the hardware sells at or near cost, while the platform it feeds, queries, capture, and eventually displays, is the actual product. Reality Labs, the division that houses the glasses effort alongside virtual reality, has absorbed enormous operating losses to build that platform, as Figure 1 shows.

03 WHY THE FORM FACTOR WORKS WHERE GLASS FAILED
Google Glass failed for reasons that had little to do with the technology. It cost fifteen hundred dollars, marked its wearer as an early adopter with a prism over one eye, recorded video behind a bright indicator that made bystanders uncomfortable, and offered little that a phone in the same pocket did not do better. The backlash got its own nickname, and the Explorer program was gone by 2015.
Meta Ray-Bans answered each failure directly. They look like ordinary Ray-Bans because they are Ray-Bans, licensed and co-branded, sold in the same stores as the analog versions. The camera is discreet and the capture indicator is standard behavior. The price is sunglasses money, not developer-kit money. Most importantly, each function has a clear job: point-of-view photos people actually take, hands-free calls, open-ear music on a bike, and instant answers about whatever you are looking at.
Distribution did the rest. Sunglasses are an impulse category with global retail reach, and the upgrade cadence, a quiet 2021 debut, a 2023 relaunch, meaningful AI features layered on in 2024 and 2025, gives repeat buyers a reason to come back. Glass asked people to change behavior for the computer's benefit; Ray-Bans changed the computer to fit existing behavior.
04 BATTERY, PRIVACY AND THE PRICE OF ALWAYS-ON
The bill for the form factor arrives at the battery. Glasses must stay light enough to wear all day, which caps cell capacity, so typical mixed use runs a few hours of capture, queries, and audio, with the charging case covering the rest of the day. Always-on assistant behavior, continuously listening and looking, is exactly what the power budget cannot support, so the devices live in a duty-cycled middle ground: wake word on standby, active sensing only when summoned or recording.
Privacy is the sharper constraint. The capture indicator signals recording, but a camera at eye level sees things bystanders cannot assume are private, and schools, bars, and some workplaces have already restricted camera glasses. Security researchers demonstrated in 2024 that off-the-shelf facial recognition could be bolted onto the platform, which sharpened regulatory scrutiny in Europe and elsewhere. Vendor controls, indicator lights, capture states, app-level restrictions, currently set the norm, but norms enforced by a single vendor are weaker than norms enforced by regulation.
There is also the data bargain. Voice and image queries improve the models, and users accept cloud processing of what they look at and ask about in exchange for the assistant's usefulness. Where that data goes, how long it is kept, and what enterprise customers will tolerate are unsettled questions that will shape adoption as much as battery chemistry.
05 THE ROAD TO DISPLAYS
The 2025 step added the missing half: Meta's Ray-Ban Display put a monocular in-lens display into a glasses frame, showing notifications, directions, translations, and captions across a small field of view, controlled by a neural wristband that reads gesture intent from the wrist. It is glanceable information, not immersive augmented reality, and Meta has been explicit that this is the design intent: screens in glasses before screens that replace them.
True augmented reality remains a prototype story. Meta's Orion demonstration glasses in 2024 delivered a wide-field-of-view holographic experience in a package too expensive and too bulky to ship, which is an honest statement of the state of the art: the optics exist, the silicon exists, and the mass-production economics do not. Waveguide displays, microLED brightness, and thermal budgets all need another generation or two of cost reduction before full AR sits on a face at a consumer price.
The shipment curve shows why the industry can afford patience. Industry estimates put global smart glasses volume at roughly one and a half million units in 2023, growing severalfold since, with end-of-decade forecasts in the tens of millions, as Figure 2 shows. Displays ride that curve: every doubling of the installed base funds the next round of optics and silicon.

06 THE PLATFORM BATTLE
Meta's lead is real but contested. Google has responded with Android XR, an operating system for glasses and headsets built with Samsung and eyewear partners including Warby Parker, aiming to do for glasses what Android did for phones. Apple, after shipping Vision Pro as a spatial computing statement, is widely reported to be working on camera-capable glasses of its own. Snap keeps building AR glasses for its community, and Chinese vendors including Xiaomi and Rokid ship hardware at aggressive prices.
The prize is the assistant layer. On a glasses-shaped computer, the operating system is the voice-and-vision model that answers when you ask a question about the world, and whoever owns that layer controls the developer platform, the search behavior, and the commerce that follows. That is why a hardware business with visible losses gets treated as a strategic investment rather than a hobby.
The developer story is the unsettled part. Today the glasses run first-party software, the camera app, the assistant, music services, with a thin third-party story compared with phones or watches. If third-party developers get real distribution, the platform race becomes an ecosystem race; if they do not, glasses stay a phone peripheral and the platform fight stays small.
07 LIMITS, LEGACY AND WHAT TO WATCH
The honest limits of the 2026 hardware: batteries measured in hours, displays confined to a corner of one lens, assistants that depend on a cloud connection, and social tolerance that varies by country and context. None of these are hidden. They are the visible seams of a first-generation platform, and each one maps to an active engineering program.
The legacy so far is that the category exists at all. Camera glasses went from cautionary tale to the fastest-growing wearable form factor on the strength of a fashion partnership, a price cut to accessories money, and an assistant that finally had a job. Reality Labs' accumulated losses, tens of billions of dollars since 2020 as Figure 1 showed, are the price Meta paid to own the form factor before the phone-era incumbents organized.
What to watch next is legible in numbers: sell-through of display-equipped models rather than press reactions, the attach rate of AI queries on the base models, the first shipping Android XR glasses, and year-over-year battery and display specifications. If shipments keep climbing on the curve in Figure 2, glasses become the second major personal computing platform of the AI era; if they stall as a phone accessory, the losses will read as an expensive hedge. Either way, the evidence arrives quickly now, one sales season at a time.
