01 The Disaster That Created the Zone

On April 26, 1986, Reactor No. 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded during a safety test gone catastrophically wrong. The explosion — a steam explosion followed by a graphite fire — blew the 1,000-ton roof off the reactor building and ejected radioactive material high into the atmosphere. The fire burned for ten days, releasing an estimated 400 times more radioactive material than the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Radioactive fallout drifted across the Soviet Union, Scandinavia, and eventually much of Europe. It remains the worst nuclear accident in history, one of only two events ever classified at Level 7 — the maximum — on the International Nuclear Event Scale.

The Soviet authorities initially tried to conceal the disaster. The evacuation of the nearby town of Pripyat, home to 49,000 people — most of them plant workers and their families — did not begin until 36 hours after the explosion. Within two weeks, a 30-kilometer exclusion zone was established around the plant, from which all civilians were permanently removed. Eventually the zone was expanded, and today it covers approximately 2,600 square kilometers across parts of Ukraine and Belarus. The Exclusion Zone, or "the Zone" as it is known, was born from catastrophe — a radioactive quarantine area where human civilization was forcibly removed and nature was left to reclaim what remained.

02 Pripyat: A City Frozen in Time

Pripyat, the purpose-built atomic town three kilometers from the reactor, is the zone's most haunting landmark. Founded in 1970 to house Chernobyl workers, it was a model Soviet city of nearly 50,000 residents with schools, a hospital, a cultural palace, amusement parks, and sports facilities. When the evacuation order came on April 27, residents were told they would be gone for three days. They never returned. Today Pripyat is a city frozen at the moment of its abandonment, a time capsule of late-Soviet life slowly being consumed by decay.

The iconic Ferris wheel in the amusement park, scheduled to open on May 1, 1986, never turned with passengers. The swimming pool, the gymnasium, the classrooms with textbooks still on desks — all remain as they were left, though decades of looting, weathering, and vegetation have transformed them. Trees grow through sidewalks and into buildings. The famous Azure swimming pool remained in use by cleanup workers (liquidators) until 1997, a surreal anomaly where people swam in a functioning facility within the contaminated zone. Pripyat has become one of the most visited urban-ruin sites in the world, its decaying towers of apartments a monument to the human cost of nuclear hubris.

The Zone covers roughly 2,600 square kilometers — an area larger than Luxembourg — from which all human settlement was permanently removed. Within it, radiation levels vary by orders of magnitude depending on location and proximity to fallout hotspots.

03 The New Safe Confinement

For 30 years after the disaster, Reactor No. 4 sat beneath the hastily constructed "sarcophagus," a concrete and steel structure built by liquidators in the months following the explosion. The sarcophagus was never intended to be permanent — it was constructed under impossible conditions, with workers exposed to lethal radiation, and its design life was approximately 20-30 years. By the 2000s, the structure was deteriorating, with cracks allowing rainwater into the ruined reactor, creating ongoing contamination risks. Something more robust was urgently needed.

The answer was the New Safe Confinement, an enormous arch-shaped steel structure that stands as one of the most ambitious engineering projects of the 21st century. At 108 meters tall and 162 meters long, with a span of 257 meters and a weight of 36,000 tons, it is one of the largest movable structures ever built. The arch was assembled in two halves 300 meters from the reactor, then slid into position over the sarcophagus on rails in November 2016. The confinement was completed and handed over to Ukraine in 2019 at a total cost of approximately €1.5 billion, funded by an international coalition of more than 40 donor countries through the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The structure is designed to contain radioactive material for at least 100 years, allowing for the eventual dismantling of the reactor and the removal of remaining fuel-containing materials.

04 The Accidental Wildlife Refuge

One of the most remarkable scientific findings of the past four decades is that the Exclusion Zone has become a de facto wildlife sanctuary. With humans removed from the landscape, animal populations rebounded dramatically. Wolves, elk, wild boar, roe deer, red deer, beavers, foxes, and dozens of other mammal species now thrive in the Zone at population densities often exceeding those in nearby protected nature reserves. A 2015 study published in the journal Current Biology found that wildlife in the Zone is abundant and diverse, with no evidence of population suppression from radiation at the landscape scale. The absence of human disturbance — hunting, agriculture, vehicle traffic, habitat destruction — has been a far more powerful ecological force than the presence of radiation.

Perhaps the most unexpected colonists are Przewalski's horses. In 1998, a small population of these critically endangered wild horses — the last truly wild horse species on Earth — was introduced to the Zone from a captive breeding program. They adapted successfully, and their population grew despite the radiation. The Zone also hosts a rich bird community, including rare species like white-tailed eagles, and supports populations of amphibians and reptiles that appear physically normal despite chronic radiation exposure. The scientific debate continues about the sub-lethal effects of chronic low-dose radiation on individual organisms, but the overall picture is clear: the removal of humans from this landscape has allowed nature to flourish in ways that would have been impossible in a continuously inhabited, exploited region.

05 Tourism in the Zone of Alienation

Beginning around 2010, and accelerating after the HBO miniseries Chernobyl aired in 2019, tourism to the Exclusion Zone surged. By 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion, the Zone was receiving over 100,000 visitors per year. Tourists could book day trips from Kyiv, passing through military checkpoints, visiting the abandoned town of Chernobyl, touring Pripyat's landmarks, and approaching the New Safe Confinement. Guides carried dosimeters and tourists were issued personal radiation monitoring devices. A day's visit typically resulted in a radiation dose roughly equivalent to a transatlantic flight — a few microsieverts, far below dangerous levels.

Tourism was a significant source of revenue for the Zone's management and for local communities. But it was also a deeply unusual form of dark tourism — visiting a place of tragedy and contamination as a leisure activity. The zone's guides, many of them former residents or scientists, served as interpreters of a landscape that exists nowhere else on Earth. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, tourism was suspended. Russian forces occupied the Zone in the opening days of the war, raising radioactive dust by digging trenches in contaminated soil — a deeply dangerous act that demonstrated, once again, that the Zone's hazards are never entirely dormant. Tourism gradually resumed in 2023-2024, though at reduced levels and under heightened security protocols.

06 War and the Zone

The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 brought a new and entirely unexpected dimension to the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone's story. In the first days of the war, Russian forces crossed the Belarusian border and seized the Zone, occupying it for over a month. Soldiers dug trenches in the Red Forest — one of the most contaminated areas in the Zone, where radioactive material settled after the 1986 explosion — stirring up radioactive dust and reportedly exposing themselves to significant doses. When Ukrainian forces retook the Zone in late March 2022, they found the area's monitoring systems damaged, equipment looted, and radiation levels elevated in areas where soldiers had disturbed the soil.

The occupation underscored the Zone's continued geopolitical vulnerability. The New Safe Confinement, the spent fuel storage facilities, and the contaminated soil and debris across the landscape all require constant management and security. The war interrupted power supplies to critical cooling and monitoring systems, requiring emergency diesel generators to maintain safety operations. The Zone's staff — several thousand workers who maintain the facilities, monitor radiation, and manage the landscape — continued their work even during the occupation. The Exclusion Zone is not abandoned. Roughly 3,000-5,000 workers continue to maintain safety systems, monitor radiation, and manage facilities. A small number of elderly residents, called "samosely," have returned to their ancestral villages and live in the Zone full-time.

07 The Next 100 Years

The New Safe Confinement is designed for a 100-year service life, but the work inside it — the dismantling of the destroyed reactor and the removal of radioactive fuel-containing masses — will take decades. The Shelter Implementation Plan, managed by an international coalition, outlines a phased approach: stabilizing the old sarcophagus, removing its unstable components, and eventually extracting the highly radioactive materials from the reactor core. This work is performed by robots and remotely operated equipment where possible, with human entry limited to the briefest possible exposures. The Zone itself will remain restricted for the foreseeable future — some areas will be uninhabitable for thousands of years, though others have already decayed to levels that would be safe for human habitation, if not for the institutional and political framework that maintains the exclusion.

The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone is unlike any other place on Earth. It is a monument to technological catastrophe, a laboratory for radiation biology, an accidental wilderness, a pilgrimage site for dark tourists, and a front line in a war zone. It is a landscape where the absence of humans has allowed nature to rebound in extraordinary ways, even as invisible contamination persists in the soil, the water, and the bodies of the organisms that live there. Forty years after the disaster, the Zone remains a paradox: a place defined by human failure that has become, through no one's intention, one of Europe's most important ecological experiments.
