01 Before the Wire: Optical Telegraphs

The first telegraphs used light, not electricity. In 1792, Claude Chappe built a chain of towers across France, each topped with movable wooden arms that could spell out messages in a visual code. A message could travel from Paris to the Belgian border in under ten minutes—astonishing for the era.

The Chappe system required line-of-sight, clear weather, and operators at every tower. It was expensive, fragile, and limited to fixed routes. But it proved that structured communication at speed was possible, and it whetted the appetite of governments and merchants for more.

02 The Rival Inventors

Samuel Morse did not invent the telegraph alone. In Britain, William Cooke and Charles Wheatstone patented a needle telegraph in 1837, running commercial service on British railways before Morse's first line. In Germany, Carl Gauss and Wilhelm Weber built a working electromagnetic telegraph in 1833.

Morse's advantage was not priority but commercialization. With Alfred Vail's engineering improvements and political connections in Washington, Morse secured federal funding for the Baltimore line. The rivalry was bitter, with patent disputes spanning decades and continents.

03 The Transatlantic Cable Saga

Connecting Europe and America required a cable across 1,600 miles of ocean floor, in water up to 3 miles deep. The first attempt in 1857 failed when the cable snapped. The 1858 cable worked briefly—Queen Victoria and President Buchanan exchanged messages—but failed after three weeks due to excessive voltage burning through the insulation.

It took eight more years of engineering, financing, and failed expeditions before a durable cable was laid in 1866. The project cost more than the purchase of Alaska. It was the Apollo program of its era, funded by private capital and government subsidies.

04 The Telegraph and the Civil War

The American Civil War was the first conflict fought with instant communication. President Lincoln spent hours in the War Department telegraph office, reading battlefield reports in real time. Generals coordinated movements across hundreds of miles. The telegraph gave the Union a logistics advantage that helped offset Confederate tactical skill.

The war also demonstrated the telegraph's intelligence value. Wiretapping, coded messages, and disinformation all appeared. The telegraph was a weapon as much as a tool.

05 The Rise of News Agencies

The telegraph created modern journalism. Before it, newspapers relied on slow mail and reprinted each other's stories weeks late. The telegraph enabled wire services: Reuters, AP, Havas, and Wolff were all founded in the 1840s-1850s to sell timely news to multiple papers simultaneously.

This concentrated information power. A handful of agencies shaped what the world knew. The telegraph's speed also created the deadline—news had to be filed before the last dispatch of the night, a rhythm that persists in newsrooms today.

06 The Quiet Death

The telegraph did not die suddenly. The telephone, invented in 1876, ate into local traffic. Telex, fax, and email each took a slice. Western Union, once the dominant telegraph company, sent its last telegram in 2006. In India, the world's last major telegraph network, the service closed in 2013.

But the telegraph's legacy is the idea that mattered: information can be encoded, transmitted at the speed of light, and decoded at a distance. Every phone call, every email, every text message is a descendant of the click of a sounder.
