01 Two Hikers and a Body in the Ice
On September 19, 1991, two German tourists, Erika and Helmut Simon, were hiking through the Ötztal Alps on the border between Austria and Italy. At an elevation of 3,210 meters, near the Hauslabjoch pass, they spotted something brown protruding from the ice of a melting glacier. At first they assumed it was the body of a mountaineer who had died in an accident. The discovery was reported to Austrian authorities, who initially treated it as a modern fatality and attempted to recover the body with ice axes and pneumatic drills, causing some damage to the remains before the significance of the find became clear.
Within days, archaeologist Konrad Spindler of the University of Innsbruck examined the remains and recognized immediately that this was no modern mountaineer. The copper axe found alongside the body was of a type dating to the Copper Age, roughly 4,000 to 5,000 years old. The body was not a recent accident victim but a prehistoric mummy preserved in the ice for over five millennia. The discovery was extraordinary because the ice had preserved not only the body itself but also clothing, tools, and equipment that would normally decompose within decades of death. It was the best-preserved prehistoric human body ever found, and it would soon become one of the most studied archaeological specimens in history.
02 Who Was Ötzi?
Scientific investigation has built an increasingly detailed portrait of the man now known as Ötzi, named after the Ötztal Alps where he was found. Radiocarbon dating placed his death between approximately 3350 and 3105 BC, during the Copper Age or Chalcolithic period. He was about 46 years old when he died, stood roughly 160 centimeters tall, and weighed around 50 kilograms. He had brown eyes, a beard, and long dark hair worn in braids. DNA analysis has revealed his genetic lineage as typical of Central European farming populations of the period, and his genome was sequenced in 2012, making him one of the first ancient humans to have his full genome mapped.
His health was far from perfect. CT scans revealed that he suffered from arthritis in his spine, hips, and knees. He had a whipworm infection, an intestinal parasite. His teeth showed significant wear and cavities, consistent with a diet heavy in grains ground on stone mills. He had a tattoo of an arrowhead-shaped mark on his left wrist and a series of parallel line tattoos on his lower spine and legs. Analysis of his intestinal contents showed that his last meal included ibex meat, red deer, grains, and seeds, a substantial meal that suggests he had not been starving.
03 His World: Copper Age Europe
Ötzi lived during a transitional period in European prehistory, the Copper Age, when metalworking was beginning to supplement but not yet replace stone tools. The Copper Age, also called the Chalcolithic or Eneolithic period, spanned roughly 4500 to 3500 BC in Central Europe and represents the bridge between the Neolithic and the Bronze Age. Copper was the first metal to be worked, but it was too soft for many applications, so stone, bone, and wood tools remained dominant. The transition to bronze, a harder alloy of copper and tin, would come several centuries after Ötzi's death.
Ötzi's equipment tells the story of this transitional moment. He carried a copper axe with a blade shaped by cold hammering and then sharpened, a tool that would have been enormously valuable in his society. The axe handle was made of yew wood, and the blade was secured with birch tar and leather binding. Alongside this metal tool, he also carried stone tools, including a flint knife and a quiver of arrows with flint arrowheads. His clothing was sophisticated and warm, made from multiple animal skins including goat, sheep, bear, and deer, carefully stitched together with sinew. He wore a woven grass cape as a raincoat, leather shoes stuffed with grass for insulation, and a bearskin cap. His kit included a fire-making kit with tinder, a container made of birch bark, and medicinal plants including a birch fungus known for its antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties.
04 The Murder: A Stone Arrow in His Shoulder
For the first decade after his discovery, the question of how Ötzi died was a mystery. Early theories suggested he had died of exposure or hypothermia, perhaps caught in a sudden storm while crossing the pass. In 2001, a radiologist named Paul Gostner noticed something that had been overlooked in the initial X-rays. A dense object was lodged in Ötzi's left shoulder, just below the collarbone. It was a flint arrowhead, approximately 13 millimeters long, embedded deep in the tissue. The arrow had entered from behind, pierced the shoulder blade, and torn a major blood vessel. Ötzi had been shot in the back.
This was not a hunting accident. The angle and location of the wound indicated a deliberate attack by another person, using a bow and arrow from some distance. The arrowhead was of a type that did not match the arrows in Ötzi's own quiver, suggesting the attacker was someone from a different community or at least using different equipment. The wound would have been fatal, causing rapid blood loss, but Ötzi apparently survived long enough to take some further action. CT scans revealed that the arrowhead had not fully penetrated to the other side, and the surrounding tissue showed signs of hemorrhage. Additional analysis found a deep cut on his right hand, a defensive wound sustained in the days before death, and a blow to the head that may have been the final cause of death, inflicted either by a fall or by another person as he lay dying.
05 What Ötzi's Body Tells Us
Ötzi's preservation has allowed scientists to extract an extraordinary amount of information about his life, his health, and even his social standing. Isotopic analysis of his tooth enamel and bone collagen has revealed that he spent his childhood in the Eisack valley south of the Alps and his adult life in the Vinschgau valley to the north, suggesting he migrated across the mountains during his lifetime. Pollen analysis from his intestinal tract has shown that he was active in different altitude zones in his final days, moving from the high alpine meadows down to the valley and then back up to the pass where he died.
His copper axe is a marker of social status. Copper was rare and expensive in the Copper Age, and a finished axe of this quality would have been a high-status item, suggesting Ötzi was a person of some importance in his community, possibly a chieftain, a metalworker, or a trader. His tattoos, numbering 61 marks in total, have been the subject of considerable debate. Some researchers have proposed that they represent an early form of acupuncture or therapeutic treatment, as many of the marks are located near joints affected by arthritis and along meridians similar to those used in traditional Chinese medicine. However, this interpretation remains speculative and contested.
His last meal, recovered from his intestinal tract, was a rich mixture of animal fat, ibex meat, red deer, einkorn wheat, and seeds. The high fat content, estimated at about 46 percent of the meal's caloric value, suggests he was deliberately eating for energy before a journey into the mountains. Analysis of his stomach contents, recovered only in 2010 when researchers realized his stomach had been displaced upward during the freezing process, confirmed that he had eaten this final meal roughly two hours before his death.
06 Legacy: The Iceman Who Changed Archaeology
Ötzi has become one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, and his study continues to yield new findings more than three decades after his recovery. He has been the subject of over a thousand scientific papers and has transformed our understanding of the Copper Age in Europe. The level of preservation of his body, clothing, and equipment provides a window into a period of prehistory that is normally accessible only through fragmentary archaeological remains. Where conventional archaeology produces a handful of sherds, a few tools, and maybe some bones, Ötzi offers a complete assemblage: a person, his clothing, his weapons, his tools, and even his last meal, all in context.
He is housed in a climate-controlled chamber at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, Italy, maintained at a constant temperature of minus 6 degrees Celsius and 98 percent humidity to replicate the glacial conditions that preserved him for five millennia. The chamber has a small window through which visitors can view the body. Research continues, with new techniques in genomics, proteomics, and microbiology being applied to his remains as they are developed. The 2012 sequencing of his full genome revealed a genetic predisposition to cardiovascular disease, lactose intolerance, and a particular blood group. His genome also identified 19 known genetic relatives living in the Tyrol region today, descendants of the same ancestral population that produced Ötzi five thousand years ago, a living echo of a man frozen in the ice of the Alps.
