01 A City at the Height of Empire
Pompeii was not a backwater. It was a prosperous city of roughly 11,000 to 20,000 inhabitants, strategically situated in the Bay of Naples region, a favored destination of Roman aristocrats. The city sat on a fertile volcanic plain that yielded abundant harvests of grain, olives, and especially wine — Pompeian wine was renowned throughout the Mediterranean. The city's economy thrived on agriculture, fishing, and its position as a trade hub connecting coastal routes to the interior of Campania.
The population reflected the cosmopolitan character of the Roman Empire. Citizens, freedmen, slaves, merchants from across the Mediterranean, and wealthy vacationers who built country villas on the city's outskirts all called Pompeii home. The city had a forum, two theaters, an amphitheater capable of holding 20,000 spectators, public baths, numerous temples, bakeries, brothels, taverns, and shops. It was a city of striking social stratification: elaborate villas with painted frescoes and mosaic floors stood streets away from cramped apartments above workshops.
02 The Warning Signs
The Romans did not recognize Vesuvius as a volcano. The mountain had not erupted in living memory — its last significant eruption was centuries earlier, in the Bronze Age, long before Pompeii existed. The cone was forested, grazed by goats, and cultivated with vineyards. To the inhabitants, it was simply a mountain. The Greek geographer Strabo, writing in the first century BC, had noted the cone-like shape but attributed it to volcanic rock without recognizing active volcanic potential.
Earthquakes were common in Campania, and in 62 AD — seventeen years before the catastrophe — a major earthquake severely damaged much of Pompeii. Reconstruction was still underway in 79 AD. The tremors continued in the days before the eruption: Pliny the Younger, who witnessed the event from across the bay at Misenum, wrote that earthquakes had been occurring "for many days previously" but were so common that no one paid them special attention. The ground was literally warning the population for weeks, possibly months, before the mountain broke open.

03 The Eruption
On the morning of October 24, 79 AD — the traditional date from Pliny's letters, though recent research suggests it may have been October 24 — Vesuvius erupted catastrophically. Pliny the Younger, 17 years old at the time, watched from Misenum across the bay and later wrote two letters to the historian Tacitus describing what he saw. His account is the only contemporary eyewitness description of a volcanic eruption in existence.
The eruption progressed in distinct phases. First, a massive Plinian column — named for Pliny — rose an estimated 32 kilometers into the atmosphere, shaped like an umbrella pine tree. For hours, ash and pumice rained down on Pompeii, accumulating at a rate of roughly 15 centimeters per hour. By evening, the city was buried under 2 to 3 meters of pumice. Most residents who fled during this phase survived. Those who sheltered indoors were becoming trapped.
Then the nature of the eruption changed. The column collapsed, sending pyroclastic surges — fast-moving clouds of superheated gas, ash, and rock fragments at temperatures of several hundred degrees — racing down the mountain at speeds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour. The first surge stopped short of Pompeii, but the sixth, arriving around dawn, overwhelmed the city walls. The surges killed anyone still alive in the city within seconds. By the time the eruption ended, Pompeii lay under 4 to 6 meters of volcanic material.
04 The Dead
The volcanic ash that killed Pompeii also preserved it. As bodies decayed in the hardened ash, they left cavities — voids where flesh had once been. In 1863, archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli had the insight to pour liquid plaster into these cavities before excavating them. The resulting casts preserved the dying poses of Pompeii's victims with extraordinary fidelity: a dog chained to a post, a mother clutching a child, a man who fell with his face in his hands. Over a thousand body casts have been recovered, and newer techniques using digital scanning have revealed bones, jewelry, and clothing within the casts.
Estimates of the death toll vary. The city's population is uncertain, and many residents fled before the lethal surges arrived. The number of victims found within the excavated area is approximately 1,150, but the unexcavated portion likely holds more. Estimates of the total dead in Pompeii and the surrounding region — including Herculaneum, Stabiae, and rural villas — range from 2,000 to 16,000, with most estimates clustering around 2,000 to 4,000 for Pompeii alone.
05 The City Frozen in Time
The ash that destroyed Pompeii sealed it like a time capsule. Unlike normal decay, where organic materials rot and disappear, the volcanic deposit created an anaerobic environment that preserved everything in the moment of burial. Loaves of bread still sat in ovens. A meal was left half-eaten on a table. Paintings on walls retained their vivid colors — the famous Pompeian red, a deep cinnabar-based pigment, looks nearly as bright today as it did in 79 AD. Graffiti survives on walls, offering direct glimpses of the language and humor of ordinary Romans: political slogans, insults, love declarations, and advertisements for gladiatorial games.
The city's infrastructure is equally well preserved. Streets show the raised stepping stones that allowed pedestrians to cross during rain. Lead pipes carried water to public fountains and some private residences. The drainage system, the public baths with their underfloor hypocaust heating, the Lupanar (brothel) with its stone beds and explicit frescoes, and the fulleries where cloth was processed all demonstrate a sophisticated urban infrastructure. The amphitheater, built around 80 BC, is the oldest surviving Roman amphitheater in the world — predating the Colosseum by over 150 years.
06 Rediscovery and Excavation
Pompeii lay forgotten for nearly 1,700 years. It was rediscovered by accident in 1748, during the reign of Charles VII of Naples, when workers digging an underground aqueduct encountered ancient walls and artifacts. The initial excavations, led by the Spanish engineer Rocque Joaquin de Alcubierre, were more treasure hunting than archaeology — wall paintings were cut from walls and carried to the royal palace, and many artifacts were damaged or lost.
Fiorelli's directorship in the 1860s brought systematic, scientific excavation. He introduced the plaster cast technique, established a system for numbering buildings by region and street, and insisted on preserving finds in situ. Later directors continued the work: Giuseppe Fiorelli, Vittorio Spinazzola, Amedeo Maiuri, and most recently the Great Pompeii Project launched in 2014, which has applied modern archaeological techniques, laser scanning, and DNA analysis to the site. As of 2024, approximately 57 of Pompeii's 66 hectares have been excavated, with the remaining area deliberately left untouched for future researchers with better tools.
07 What Pompeii Taught Us
No other archaeological site has contributed as much to our understanding of daily life in the Roman Empire. Pompeii revealed the full spectrum of Roman urban experience — from the grandeur of the Forum and the opulence of the House of the Vettii to the cramped lodgings above shops, the graffiti of political campaigns, and the mundane reality of garbage in the streets. It showed us that Romans ate flamingos, used dental tools remarkably similar to modern ones, and decorated their walls with scenes of mythology, erotica, and everyday commerce. It demonstrated that the Roman economy was more monetized and market-oriented than historians had assumed, with price lists, shop signs, and commercial records preserved in plaster.
The ongoing excavation continues to yield surprises. In 2018, a well-preserved shrine was discovered with vivid frescoes. In 2021, a perfectly preserved ceremonial chariot was found in a villa entrance. In 2023, new rooms revealed frescoes of mythological scenes. Each discovery adds another layer to a portrait that remains, even after 280 years of excavation, still incomplete — and still astonishing.
