01 A Desert Canvas

The Nazca Lines occupy the arid pampas of the Rio Grande de Nazca drainage basin in southern Peru, roughly 400 kilometers south of Lima. The desert floor here is among the driest landscapes on the planet. It receives less than a millimeter of rain in most years, and the surface is carpeted in a layer of dark iron-oxide-coated pebbles that has remained essentially undisturbed for centuries. Beneath this crust lies pale, gypsum-rich sand. The contrast between the dark surface and the light subsurface is the entire medium of the geoglyphs — a canvas of two tones created not by adding pigment but by removing stone.

The geoglyphs fall into three broad categories. The most famous are biomorphs: enormous outlines of animals and plants, including a hummingbird measuring 97 meters long, a spider, a monkey, a killer whale, a dog, a tree, and a figure popularly called "the astronaut." The second category consists of geometric shapes — triangles, trapezoids, rectangles, and spirals — some extending for hundreds of meters. The third and most numerous are straight lines, or trazos, that stretch across the desert in all directions, sometimes converging on hilltops or vanishing over the horizon. Together they cover an area of roughly 450 square kilometers.

02 When the Desert Was Drawn

Archaeological evidence places the creation of the geoglyphs across roughly a millennium, between approximately 500 BC and 500 AD. Scholars distinguish two major phases. The earlier Paracas phase, from about 400 to 200 BC, is associated with geometric and biomorphic figures that share stylistic traits with Paracas culture textiles and ceramics. The later Nazca phase, from 200 BC to 500 AD, accounts for the majority of the straight lines, trapezoids, and the most iconic animal figures. The Nazca people were a sophisticated pre-Columbian civilization that flourished in the river valleys of the region, constructing underground aqueducts called puquios that still function today.

What makes the survival of these figures so remarkable is the desert's near-total absence of weathering. Wind moves loose sand but rarely displaces the heavier pebbles. Rain falls perhaps once in a decade, and the soil's gypsum content helps bind the surface. The Nazca Desert is one of the few places on Earth where a shallow scratch in the ground can persist for two thousand years.

03 How They Were Made

The construction technique was deceptively simple. The makers cleared the dark surface pebbles along a planned path, exposing the lighter soil beneath. For straight lines, they used stakes and cords to maintain alignment, and the remnants of wooden posts have been found at the endpoints of several lines. The lines can be remarkably straight over distances of several kilometers, suggesting an understanding of basic surveying. For curved figures, the artists likely used ropes anchored at a center point to trace arcs, producing the smooth curves seen in the spirals and the bodies of the biomorphs.

The key insight, established by archaeologist Maria Reiche in the 1940s, was that the Nazca did not need to see their figures from above to draw them. They could scale up small drawings using simple geometric proportion and rope-and-stake surveying, working entirely at ground level. The figures only become coherent when viewed from the air — but that was never a requirement for their construction.

04 Discovery From the Sky

Although some Nazca Lines were visible from nearby foothills, their full extent was not appreciated until the age of flight. In 1927, Peruvian archaeologist Toribio Mejia Xesspe spotted them while hiking through the foothills. The first aerial photographs were taken in the 1930s, and the lines came to wider attention through the work of Paul Kosok, an American historian who visited the region in 1941 and famously declared the desert "the largest astronomy book in the world" after observing the sun setting along one of the lines.

Maria Reiche, a German mathematician and archaeologist, devoted her life to mapping and preserving the geoglyphs from 1946 until her death in 1998. She produced the first comprehensive surveys, identified dozens of new figures, and successfully lobbied the Peruvian government to restrict access to the pampas. Her work established the academic framework within which all subsequent research operates. UNESCO inscribed the Nazca Lines as a World Heritage Site in 1994.

05 The Astronomical Hypothesis

Kosok and Reiche believed the lines served an astronomical or calendrical purpose. They proposed that certain lines pointed toward the rising or setting positions of the sun, moon, and stars at specific times of the agricultural year. The idea was intuitive — an agricultural society in a rainless desert would need accurate calendars to predict the brief window when rivers carried snowmelt from the Andes. However, subsequent statistical studies have cast doubt on this interpretation. Gerald Hawkins, the astronomer who had famously debunked astronomical alignments at Stonehenge, applied the same statistical analysis to the Nazca Lines in the 1990s and found no significant correlation between line orientations and astronomical events beyond what random chance would produce.

06 Water Rituals and Pilgrimage

If the astronomical hypothesis has weakened, the water-ritual hypothesis has gained ground. Anthropologists Johan Reinhard and others have argued that the lines and figures were part of a ceremonial system aimed at summoning and honoring water — the most precious resource in one of Earth's driest deserts. The Nazca civilization depended on sporadic river flow fed by Andean snowmelt, and the geometric trapezoids often point toward the highlands where water originates. The biomorphs, particularly the spider, the monkey, and the hummingbird, are animals associated in Nazca iconography with fertility and rainfall. The straight lines may have been processional paths walked by pilgrims as part of water ceremonies, a physical prayer for moisture in a land where rain almost never falls.

The most recent wave of discoveries has transformed understanding of the geoglyphs' scope. Between 2018 and 2025, researchers from Yamagata University used drones and satellite imagery to identify over 350 previously unknown figures, including many on hillsides rather than the flat pampas. Some of the newly found biomorphs predate the classic Nazca phase and belong to the earlier Paracas or Chavín horizon, pushing the origin of geoglyph-making in the region back further than previously believed.

07 Threats and Preservation

The same aridity that preserved the lines for two millennia cannot protect them from modern hazards. Urban expansion from the city of Nazca, illegal mining, off-road vehicle damage, and agricultural encroachment threaten the pampas. Climate change is altering precipitation patterns in the Andes, raising the possibility of more frequent rain events on the pampas — rain that could dissolve the fragile gypsum layer. In 2014, the Nazca region suffered unusual rainfall that damaged a section of the pampas, an event that would have been unthinkable a generation earlier.

Preservation efforts focus on expanding the protected zone, enforcing restrictions on ground access, and using satellite monitoring to detect incursions. The challenge is immense: the geoglyphs are spread across hundreds of square kilometers of open, largely unpatrolled desert. But the payoff is equally significant — the Nazca Lines are one of humanity's most enigmatic cultural achievements, a vast library of images drawn in stone and sand by a people whose names we do not know and whose purpose we can only infer.
