01 TECHNOLOGY WAS A RELIABLE ROUTINE

Timbuktu's technology is easy to miss because it was distributed across ordinary practices. Builders mixed earth, scholars prepared pages, families maintained roofs, traders measured goods, and caravan workers planned movement between wells. 06 MEASUREMENT TURNED TRUST INTO TRADE

Trade required conventions that could survive across languages and jurisdictions.
