01Invisible infrastructure runs everything

GPS is invisible infrastructure. You use it every day, but you do not see it. When you open a maps app, when you order a ride, when you track a package, when you pay with a credit card, GPS is working in the background. It tells your phone where you are, it tells the delivery driver where you are, it timestamps your credit card transaction to prevent fraud. 02Precision is a public good

GPS provides a service that is both free and precise. Anyone with a receiver can determine their position to within a few meters, and with augmentation, to within centimeters. This precision was once available only to the military, but it is now available to everyone, at no cost. The decision to make GPS freely available to civilians, reinforced by the decision to turn off Selective Availability in 2000, turned a military system into a public good. The precision that once guided missiles now guides your drive to a restaurant.

03Military technology becomes civilian utility

GPS was built by the military, for military purposes. It was designed to guide nuclear submarines, to coordinate troop movements, and to deliver precision weapons. The system was classified in its early years, and civilian access was deliberately degraded. Yet today, GPS is one of the most widely used civilian technologies in the world. The transition from military to civilian was not an accident; it was a decision, made when the military realized that the economic value of accurate civilian GPS far outweighed the military risk.

This is a pattern that repeats throughout the history of technology. The internet began as ARPANET, a military research network. Jet engines were developed for military aircraft. Synthetic rubber was created to replace natural rubber cut off by war. Radar, satellite communications, and many other technologies followed the same path. 04The most powerful systems are the ones you never think about

06What GPS teaches us about the world

What GPS ultimately teaches us about the world is that the most transformative technologies are not the ones that announce themselves but the ones that disappear. GPS does not announce itself. It does not have a brand, a logo, or a marketing campaign. It is a constellation of satellites broadcasting radio signals, and it has become so deeply embedded in the world that we forget it is there. But remove it, and the world stops working. Navigation fails, financial transactions lose their timestamps, power grids lose their synchronization, aircraft lose their guidance. GPS is a lesson in what the world really is: not a collection of visible things but a network of invisible systems, each one essential, each one unnoticed, each one holding the world together.
