Before the telegraph, every town kept its own local time, set by the sun. Noon was when the sun was highest. The telegraph is gone, but its architecture survives. Encode information as pulses. Route it through switching nodes. Use repeaters to maintain signal over distance. Multiplex channels to share infrastructure. Standardize protocols for interconnection. Charge by volume. Compress to save cost.
