The Pierce Terrace Elementary School building was built in the early 1970's to service the youngest school age children on Fort Jackson - Prekindergarten, Kindergarten, and first grade pupils. The building's construction was modeled after the open space school concepts of the time so that all classrooms could be opened and connected to make larger learning spaces. It was also designed to serve when necessary as an additional bomb shelter on Post and still serves the community as a severe weather shelter. Pierce Terrace Elementary School has been well maintained and landscaped and now serves all kindergarten and first grade pupils on Fort Jackson plus two sessions of prekindergarten - approximately 240 pupils. To minimize distraction and facilitate learning, walls between classrooms have been added with connecting doors. In 2005, a four classroom addition was constructed - (two Pre-kindergarten classrooms and two special service classrooms).
