Kameyama Hachiman Shrine

Kameyama Hachiman Shrine, located in front of Karato market, was built back in 859. The shrine worships Gods such as Ojin, Nintoku, Chu-ai and Jingu-kogo, and fondly called by the locals "patron saint of Seki". 12m (35ft) high Torii gate soars at the foot of the front stone steps, it was constructed back in 1933. Other points of interest include world's largest blowfish statue, several homage to the legendary turtle who sacrificed himself for the construction of this shrine, literary monuments of the famous female authors Misuzu Kaneko and Fumiko Hayashi, and the spot where a fateful gunshot was fired, which triggered a series of battles of Shimonoseki Campaign back in 1864.
