04 The impact on commercial banks

CBDCs pose a structural challenge to commercial banks. 05 What countries are leading CBDC development

The People's Bank of China reports cumulative transaction values exceeding hundreds of billions of yuan. India's digital rupee, launched in pilot in December 2022, has similarly moved from concept to real-world usage, with both retail and wholesale variants in operation. The Bank of England is consulting on a digital pound, with a potential launch in the late 2020s. The United States has been more cautious, with the Federal Reserve publishing research but not committing to development. Japan, Canada, and Australia are all in various research phases. The disparity in progress reflects different policy priorities: countries with large unbanked populations or strong state-directed financial systems have moved faster, while those with developed payment infrastructure see less urgency.

06 The programmable money question

07 What CBDCs mean for financial freedom

Cash provides a form of financial freedom that is easy to take for granted: the ability to transact without permission, without surveillance, and without dependence on a third party.
