Dark Matter and Dark Energy: The Invisible Majority of the Universe

01The night sky is not the full inventory
Stars, gas, dust and planets make up only a small share of the mass-energy inferred from cosmological observations. The missing gravitational component is called dark matter because it does not absorb, emit or reflect light in the ordinary way.
02Gravity reveals what light cannot
Galaxies rotate faster than visible matter alone predicts. Gravitational lensing bends background light around mass, including mass that cannot be seen. These are different observations pointing toward an additional distribution of matter.

03Dark matter builds the cosmic web
In the standard picture, dark matter clumps under gravity and provides scaffolding for galaxies. Ordinary matter falls into those gravitational wells, cools and forms stars. The model links structure on enormous scales to an invisible component.
04Dark energy is a different inference
Dark energy is the name given to whatever causes cosmic expansion to accelerate. It is not simply dark matter with a stronger effect. The simplest model treats it as a property of space, but alternatives remain under investigation.
05A useful budget is still a model
The often-quoted fractions are estimates within a specific cosmological framework. They summarize several datasets, including the cosmic microwave background and large-scale structure. They are not a direct chemical assay of the universe.

06The detection problem is fundamental
Direct searches look for rare interactions between dark-matter candidates and ordinary atoms. Colliders seek new particles, while astronomical surveys map their gravitational effects. No single experiment has yet closed the case.
07What would change the picture
A confirmed particle interaction would connect cosmology to laboratory physics. A failure to find particles across plausible ranges would increase pressure on modified-gravity or emergent explanations. The strongest conclusion today is observational: the universe behaves as if unseen components matter.
