Project Gatekeeper Speeds Software Screening. Command Sponsorship Still Matters

DutyStation original analysis · October 27, 2026

The Army's new Project Gatekeeper offers commercial software developers a faster route into security evaluation. For officers trying to get a useful application into a command, its significance is the prospect of a more orderly intake process. A successful scan still leaves decisions about the mission, users, data and support.

The development, and its present limits

Army Public Affairs reported on October 25 that the service launched Gatekeeper on October 23. The platform places submitted code and containerized applications in isolated testing environments and produces security feedback and evidence for authorizing officials. The announcement describes access for vendors with a Department of War common access card, with Login.gov access planned. It does not provide a date for that public-access step. Read the Army's announcement.

The service presents a substantial reduction in evaluation time as a benefit. That claim should not become a promise that every application can receive an authority to operate in minutes. Security evidence supports an authorization decision; it does not make the decision for the authorizing official.

What a field-grade sponsor should bring

A major or lieutenant colonel sponsoring software can make the proposal stronger before a developer submits it. The essential product is a clear account of the work to be improved: the user, the present process, the expected benefit and the evidence that would demonstrate it.

For example, a proposed staff workflow tool should have an accountable owner and a measurable task. “Reduce the time needed to reconcile this recurring report” is a testable proposition. “Put AI into the headquarters” leaves the command with a technology request and no agreed definition of success.

The sponsor should also be able to identify the data involved, the intended operating environment and the organization expected to support the application. These are planning questions for the appropriate technical, acquisition and authorization staff. They do not confer permission to upload operational or personal data into a new service.

Admission is only the first part of adoption

A separate Army sustainment review, described publicly on October 21, emphasized coordination among program managers, sustainment leads, funding and technical data. Its relevance to software is an inference: a faster entry process will be more useful if the receiving organization can maintain what it adopts. Read the Army's sustainment review.

Before making a pilot operationally important, a command should know who handles defects, future changes and the end of the vendor relationship. Otherwise a successful demonstration can create a dependency that outlasts its sponsor's tour.

The evidence that will matter next

The evidence to judge this development includes completed evaluations, authorization decisions, broader vendor access and sustained use. Those are proposed reporting measures, not results claimed here. For officers, the practical opportunity is to prepare better-defined requirements now while verifying the platform's current access and authorization conditions.
