How Photonic Chips Work: Turning Light Into a Computing Advantage
Photo: N43 and HermesPhotonic integrated circuits do not replace every transistor. They move, shape, combine, and detect light on a chip—where bandwidth and energy per data movement matter most.
01A photonic chip is an optical circuit
A photonic integrated circuit (PIC) is a microchip containing two or more photonic components that form a working circuit. Instead of moving information only as changing voltages and currents, a PIC detects, generates, transports, and processes signals carried by photons. The core engineering question is not whether light is “faster” in the abstract; it is where optical propagation can remove electrical bottlenecks.
FIG 1 · The basic optical path: generate, encode, guide, and detect or compute.
That makes photonics especially attractive for fiber-optic communications, data-center links, sensors, and selected AI workloads. Electronics remain essential for control, memory, conversion, and software-facing interfaces. The practical product is usually a hybrid system.
02The four jobs inside the chip
A useful mental model has four stages. A laser or bonded light source generates photons. A modulator imprints data on the optical carrier. Waveguides—tiny paths patterned into the material—route and split the light. Detectors convert the arriving optical signal back into an electrical one, or optical elements combine and transform signals before detection.
Unlike an electronic integrated circuit, there is no single dominant photonic device equivalent to the transistor. A PIC may combine low-loss waveguides, splitters, amplifiers, modulators, filters, lasers, and detectors. That variety is why photonic integration is a materials and packaging challenge as much as a lithography challenge.
03Why silicon is useful—and insufficient
Silicon is familiar to the semiconductor industry and supports co-integration with electronic circuitry, but it is not ideal for every optical function. Indium phosphide can integrate active light sources and passive components. Silica offers low loss and low thermal sensitivity for passive circuits. Lithium niobate is valued for electro-optic modulation. Silicon photonics therefore often means a platform ecosystem, not a single pure-material recipe.
Fabrication borrows from electronics: photolithography patterns wafers, followed by etching and material deposition. But the device library is different. Optical loss, phase, polarization, thermal drift, coupling, and alignment all have to be managed. Packaging—getting light efficiently into and out of the chip—can dominate the system design.
04The bandwidth case is really a data-movement case
Photonic chips are compelling in AI infrastructure because moving data can consume more energy and time than performing a multiply-add. Light can carry many wavelengths through the same fiber, and optical waveguides can route signals with high bandwidth. In 2022, a Technical University of Denmark experiment reported 1.84 petabits per second over more than 7.9 kilometers by combining 37 fiber cores with 223 spectral channels per core.
FIG 2 · Publicly reported milestones; units are normalized to gigabits per second.
The scale is extraordinary, but it is a communications experiment, not a consumer CPU benchmark. It demonstrates how wavelength division and spatial channels multiply capacity. A photonic accelerator must also solve precision, memory, conversion, noise, programmability, and software integration.
05Where the chip touches AI
Optical computing can implement operations such as interference, weighted summation, and matrix multiplication in the analog domain. A network of modulators and interferometers can encode values in light and exploit the physics of superposition and propagation. The potential advantage is throughput per watt for specific, regular workloads.

The featured S3 video frames light-based computing as a response to the limits of conventional scaling. That framing is useful, but the important architectural distinction is between photonic interconnects and photonic compute. A data center may gain substantial value by using light only for chip-to-chip or rack-to-rack communication, even if arithmetic remains electronic.
06The measured gains—and the caveats
Wikipedia records a Columbia Engineering system integrating optical elements into computing chips with 800 Gb/s bandwidth and a density of 5.3 Tb/s/mm². Those figures show the kind of metric photonics can improve: moving more bits through less area. They do not automatically translate into end-to-end application speed or lower total cost.

Every claimed advantage needs a boundary: is it measured at the waveguide, transceiver, chip package, board, or full system? What energy is spent on lasers, thermal control, DACs and ADCs, memory, and error correction? Honest photonic-chip analysis keeps those boundaries visible.
07The N43 readout
Photonic chips work by making light programmable enough to function as an information carrier inside an integrated circuit. Their near-term strength is not replacing the entire electronic stack. It is connecting processors, memory, sensors, and networks with more bandwidth and potentially lower energy per bit.
That is why the most credible path is hybrid: silicon and electronics for logic and control; photonics for high-throughput transport and selected transformations. The technology becomes strategically important as AI systems scale, because the cost of moving data is becoming as consequential as the cost of computing on it.
