Meta's $1,299 VR Glasses: What Connect 2026 Actually Announced

At Meta Connect on September 23 2026, Meta put four products on stage. Three can be bought now or within weeks. The fourth, the VR Glasses, arrives in spring 2027. Keeping those groups apart is the point.

2 The Frames That Ship

Pre-orders for the Ray-Ban Meta Audio, camera-free and audio-only, opened September 23 2026, shipping October 13 from $349. TechCrunch reported the camera-free frames; the BBC reported Meta positioned them partly to sidestep the "pervert glasses" criticism aimed at camera wearables. The Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 was available from September 23 2026 in 27 lens and colour combinations, from $449, with a limited Aviator version at $579. The Meta Ray-Ban Display became orderable online in the US for $799, with UK, Canadian and European pricing also announced.

3 What Meta Says About The VR Glasses

Engadget reported the VR Glasses at $1,300; 9to5Google stated $1,299 for the same product. Meta says the frames weigh about 100 grams, use a magnesium alloy body with pancake lenses, and offer full-colour passthrough with 5K displays. Meta says all processing and battery are offloaded to an external puck, delivering about 3 hours of battery for media playback, with 45W fast charging. Meta also says the glasses are five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3, and 9to5Google phrased it as roughly one fifth of the Quest 3's weight. Meta describes the form factor as similar to XREAL's upcoming Aura glasses.

4 Claims, Not Measurements

Every figure in that list is a company claim made on stage. The sources do not state the Quest 3's weight numerically, so the comparison cannot be checked, and no independent test of the VR Glasses exists yet: the product does not ship until spring 2027.

5 Demonstrated Versus Claimed

Meta has demonstrated the audio glasses: shipping October 13, from $349, with no camera. Those are product decisions at published prices that reviewers can buy and test. For the VR Glasses, the 100-gram weight, the 5K displays, the 3-hour puck battery and the five-times-lighter comparison are specifications Meta announced but did not submit to independent verification.

6 What The Reporting Leaves Open

Two things remain unresolved. The price appears as $1,299 in 9to5Google and $1,300 in Engadget for the same product, a difference the reporting does not explain, and neither has been checked against independent testing, because none exists. Separately, it is not established that the camera-free design changes the privacy criticism the BBC documented; Meta's positioning is a company argument, not a measured outcome.

7 How To Read The Announcement

Nothing announced on September 23 establishes that the VR Glasses will ship at those specifications. A spring 2027 launch leaves a product cycle in which weight, battery life and displays can change, and Meta is currently the only party that has tested them. The audio glasses can be judged against a product; the VR Glasses only against a promise.
