01A city begins as a logistics loop

The first settlers would depend on Earth for equipment, software and specialized medicine. A credible city therefore starts with a reusable transport system and cargo flights that can deliver more mass than a small crew can carry.

Mars has enough atmosphere to create heating but not enough to make parachutes sufficient for very heavy payloads. Supersonic retropropulsion, precise guidance and robust landing zones are prerequisites for moving from flags to industrial hardware.

04Power is the first settlement

Solar arrays are vulnerable to dust and seasonal variation. Fission power offers steady output and can support heating, water processing and fuel production when sunlight is weak. Redundancy matters because a single grid failure is existential.

05Local resources turn cargo into infrastructure

Water ice can provide drinking water, oxygen and hydrogen feedstock. Regolith can serve as construction material and radiation shielding. These systems are attractive because every kilogram produced locally is a kilogram not launched from Earth.

06Radiation changes the architecture

Mars lacks a global magnetic field and has a thin atmosphere. Habitats may need to be buried, covered with regolith or placed in lava tubes. Radiation exposure is a long-duration health problem, not merely a launch-day hazard.

07The timeline is a systems question

A city requires reliable cargo cadence, maintainable machines, food production and institutions that can make decisions under delay. The milestone is not the first landing; it is the point at which the settlement can survive a missed resupply window.
