01 The Power Hungry AI Boom

In 2018, US data centers consumed 12 GW. In 2025, they consume 45 GW — nearly quadrupled. For comparison, 45 GW is more than the total electricity consumption of 100 countries. AI training is the primary driver: a single GPT-4.5 training run consumes an estimated 50 GWh, enough to power 4,500 homes for a year. The rate of growth is accelerating: the 2024-2025 jump added 7 GW, equivalent to 7 nuclear reactors.

02 The Grid Can't Keep Up

The problem isn't just total power — it's location. AI data centers cluster in specific regions (Northern Virginia, Texas, Arizona) where power grids were designed for steady industrial loads, not the spiky, enormous demands of AI training. In Virginia, data centers now consume 25% of the state's electricity. Grid operators are warning of brownouts during peak demand. The utility industry is building natural gas plants as fast as it can, which conflicts with clean energy goals.

03 The Nuclear Option

Microsoft, Amazon, and Google are all investing in nuclear power — both traditional fission and experimental fusion. Microsoft signed a deal to restart Three Mile Island Unit 1. Amazon invested in X-energy's small modular reactor program. Google is exploring geothermal. The race is on to find carbon-free, reliable, high-density power. Without it, AI growth hits a hard physical limit: you can't build data centers where there's no electricity.
