The Mitochondrial Theory of Aging: Why Your Cells' Power Plants Break Down

01 The Energy Crisis
Mitochondria are the power plants of cells — they produce ATP, the energy currency of life. By age 80, mitochondrial function declines to about 22% of youthful levels. This means an 80-year-old's cells produce less than a quarter of the energy they did at 20. This energy deficit underlies much of what we experience as aging: muscle weakness, cognitive decline, slower healing, reduced immune function. When cells don't have enough energy, they can't repair DNA, clear waste, or maintain their structure.
02 The Free Radical Theory (Updated)
The old free radical theory said mitochondria produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) that damage surrounding molecules. Antioxidants would neutralize ROS and slow aging. This theory has been largely refuted — antioxidant supplements don't extend lifespan in clinical trials. The updated theory: ROS are not just damage — they're signaling molecules. Mitochondria produce controlled amounts of ROS to trigger protective responses (mitohormesis). The problem isn't ROS itself but the loss of mitochondrial quality control — the ability to repair and replace damaged mitochondria (mitophagy).
03 Restoring Mitochondrial Health
Several approaches target mitochondrial health: NAD+ precursors (which fuel mitochondrial enzymes), urolithin A (which promotes mitophagy), and mitochondrial transplantation (literally injecting healthy mitochondria into damaged tissue). The most promising data comes from urolithin A: in human trials, it improved muscle endurance in sedentary elderly adults. Mitochondrial transplantation has shown dramatic results in animal models — injected mitochondria are taken up by damaged cells and restore energy production. Human trials are beginning for heart attack recovery.
